Looking for your next getaway? These are the most unique things to do in Roanoke with kids that are also perfect for adults! (Because you deserve to enjoy your trip too!)
Okay listen, this Virginia city probably isn’t on your bucket list—but it should be. Full of history, nature, and low-key epic adventure, Roanoke is the perfect road trip stop for moms exploring solo with kids. Whether you’re craving waterfalls, quiet views, or a stay that’s cooler than a standard hotel, this little city brings the magic (without the overwhelm).
Here are 5 of the most fun, family-friendly things to do in Roanoke with kids that I personally tried—and loved—as a solo mom.

1. Spend the Night in a Fire Station

Did you know Roanoke is home to an old fire station turned luxury boutique hotel? Stay at Fire Station One in the heart of downtown Roanoke and give your kids a “whoa, we’re staying HERE?!” moment before bed.
It’s walkable to cute downtown shops and eats like The Hatch restaurant and Breadcraft Bakery for morning treats. A great spot for solo moms who want convenience, safety, and something way more memorable than a basic hotel chain.
2. Experience the Most Beautiful Sunset at the Historic Roanoke Star
For all my sunset lovers—this one’s a must. The Mill Mountain Star, aka the largest freestanding star in the world, overlooks the entire valley below. Whether you drive up or take the nearby trail, the views at golden hour are unreal.

This was one of those moments where I looked at my daughter and thought, “we’re really doing this.” It’s peaceful, kid-friendly, and a powerful reminder that solo doesn’t mean small.

3. Hike and Swim at Smith Mountain Lake
About an hour outside Roanoke is Smith Mountain Lake State Park—the kind of beach-meets-lake adventure that feels like a vacation. There’s kayaking, paddleboarding, jet skis, and a designated swimming beach that’s perfect for kids.

My 7-year-old clocked three solid hours splashing around, and I actually got to breathe without feeling overstimulated. Bonus: we went on a Friday afternoon in the summer and it wasn’t packed at all. Don’t leave without grabbing a Dream Bar from the Ice Cream Boat!
This one’s a win for moms who want peace + play in one place.
4. Take a Walk – or Ride – Back in Time at Virginia’s Museum of Transportation
Roanoke is full of history, but this spot makes it interactive for the whole fam. At the Virginia Museum of Transportation, you’ll find vintage trains, a full-size railyard, and classic cars that made my inner 90s kid geek out.
My daughter loved the train exhibits (especially the “really big” ones), and I appreciated the indoor/outdoor setup that made it easy to pace ourselves.
If you’re looking for educational things to do in Roanoke with kids, this one hits the mark—plus, it’s a short walk from the firehouse hotel above, making it easy to do on foot as a solo parent.

5. Splash in a Waterfall at Roaring Run
Just 45 minutes north of Roanoke lies one of the best beginner waterfall hikes in Virginia—Roaring Run Recreation Area. It’s a short loop (under 1 mile) that follows a stream full of swimming holes and natural water slides. And yes, there’s a gorgeous waterfall at the end.

It’s kid-friendly, adventurous, and so doable for moms hiking alone with their little ones. We played in the water, laughed through the mini rapids, and had one of our favorite hikes to date.
